But damn, another multi-billion dollar !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . This one coming in at an estimated $19B.
As someone looking to move to South Loop, I love the idea of more buildings, but damn this wont be done overnight.

Whelp, this is where you keep your house/condo, find a job overseas, and move back in ten years when it’s all done.

That’s massive. I guess it’s all going to be built on a deck over the rail lines like Hudson Yards?
Sucks for the people in the buildings behind that new development, waterfront views going poof!

What if we made Soldier Field even uglier?

How ‘bout we make the murder rate and systemic racism go down befo re we worry about making the city look pretty

Because those problems are hard to fix. Building stuff is way easier.

Can we not do both?
Also, with that approach apparently St. Louis, Baltimore, Detroit, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Kansas City, Cleveland , Memphis, and Newark all have to stop all private development as well.
And the above is just based on Murder rate, take violent crime in total and Milwaukee, Stockton CA, Albuquerque, Indianapolis, Oakland CA, San Bernardino, Anchorage
, the Nashville metro area,
Minneapolis, and Houston
would also need to stop all development as well.

Thats actually a concern of the alderman of this area. Multiple concerns including building height.

Are you suggesting we build another spac e ship on top of the first one?
![]() 04/18/2019 at 14:39 |

Obviously the trick is that as soon as they’ve started, you need to negotiate replacing those Soldier Field parking lots with garages topped with towers that will block this new development’s view.

Be careful, the last person
that tried to build on one of those lots didnt fare well haha

Milwaukee actually rates worse in violent crime than we do as well. I was legit amazed last summer when I drove through a community and saw that like every other car were wrecks on the road without license plates. Like...what the?

And the gentrification and segregation of Chicago continues! :D
Seriously though, it’s bizarre how segregated Chicago communities can be down to mere blocks and streets.

Yup, all those cities above have either higher murder rates or total violent crimes rates than Chicago.
Include property crime and a lot more cities pop ahead of Chicago too.

That’s what gives Milwaukee its charm. My house is in West Allis (live in Raleigh, too) and I’ve never felt unsafe. Even walking home from the bar at 2AM.

Was south loop ever really a minority community though? Or even a neighborhood at all? I thought it was mostly industrial, which is why there is close to zero long time “established” anything around there unless you are in Chinatown.

Meanwhile, at the Chicago Spire:

So based on past projects we’ve had here...the cost will actually be 50% higher than projected and take 75% longer than projected. Oh, and a huge chunk of that money will be going into people’s pockets rather than the project.

Hey at least this one isnt asking for TIF money.

...yet...

I think South Loop is out of TIF territory* . Especially here since I doubt you can classify the train tracks as blighted land.
*That being said the 78 or whatever its called got its funding approved so maybe not...

I don’t think they could be either. I think there are still ways that they can/would end up asking for and getting tax payer money for any project, including this one. I’m no expert, I just firmly believe in the corruption of Chicago.
Ultimately, I have the utmost confidence that this will go way over budget, way over proposed timeline, and there will be a lot of questions regarding the financing and contract approvals. As usual.
That being said, I still love it here.
